“There is more happiness in giving than in receiving”
Christian Service is a revolutionary concept. The notion of service calls us to lay selfish things aside for the needs of others. It is also an important value in all relationships.
Jesus said that he ‘came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.’
Can you remember ever thinking that you were to busy to help someone in need?
The story of Jesus washing the feet of his disciples at the Last Supper is well known—this is where he takes on the role of the lowest servant rather than that of the master. Jesus tells us clearly the meaning of this action: ‘Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done.’ Serving God, means serving others.
What are we doing in school to learn about Service?
Jesus was called the ‘servant king’: we are learning that his mission was to serve God and to serve all those people he met, through his teaching, his example and the way he led his life.
We are finding out about unsung heroes who serve us at school, at our church, at home and in our village. We are also finding out about ways in which we can serve others at school, at our church, at home and in our village.
Hall of fame-
JK Rowling is best known for writing the Harry Potter novels. She was awarded the OBE for “services to children’s literature”. She used some of the money she had earned from her books to create a charity called The Lumos Foundation. This charity has changed the lives of orphaned children in Eastern Europe.
Service at home
Serving God, means serving others.
Some things to think about:
– How are we encouraged to “find” our gifts and to use them for the good at home and in the Kibworth community?
– How do you show gratitude for those who serve/help you?
Can you complete a ‘service snail’. Living a life of service is about keeping your eyes open and looking for ways to make others smile. Draw a large smiley snail. Can you fill in on the spirals on the snail’s shell with ways in which as a family you serve each other in one week?
