Welcome to the School Council

The School Council at Kibworth Primary represent the pupil voice of the school community. They are an essential pillar in the democracy of the school and are given the capacity to implement real changes and officiate whole school events.

Each year, pupils run electoral campaigns in the first term and make promises to their year group about what they would do to improve the quality of life in the school community. The school becomes awash with electoral posters and badges and this is a great opportunity to discuss the importance of democracy as part of our British values. The pupils then deliver electrical speeches to their year groups and then there is an anonymous vote.

The elected Council in then made up of two representatives from each year group (plus a few more from Year 6). The school council is then led by a Chair and Vice Chair who are chosen by the elected council members. Other positions taken by the older members of the Council are the events managers, the secretary, and those in charge of publicity for whole school events.

The Council then meets weekly throughout the school year with a delegated teacher. These sessions are pupil-led by the Chair and Vice-Chair, and official minutes are kept by the secretary. The Council discusses recent issues as put forward by their constituents, and plan whole school events such as Comic Relief, Red Nose Day and sell poppies during Remembrance Week. They are crucial for fundraising across the school and have been pivotal in raising thousands of pounds for excellent causes.

The council also publicise these to the whole school through delivering assemblies. During this year, this has been through videos for events such as Tom Moore’s 100 Challenge. The Council were also tasked in deciding which charity they wanted the money to benefit, liaising with their year groups before deciding on the perfect one. But this just scratches the surface of the impact the council has across the school community!

Our Vision

The School Council Vision Statement is as follows:

  • Our school council works together as a team to ensure we can be the best school possible.
  • We aim to make pupils to feel comfortable, happy and safe at school.
  • We shall work hard to make our world a better place
  • We want to improve our school by discussing ideas and making decisions.
  • We aim to listen to others and discuss comments and suggestions that would make our school an even more wonderful place.

From Friendship Officers and Eco Officers to Change Consultants and Safety Officers, the council truly represent the voice of the pupils.

Pupil Parliament

Another facet of our democracy at Kibworth Primary is the Pupil Parliament. The Parliament consists of elected members who attend monthly meetings with all the other Parliaments across the Discovery Schools. This gives our pupils an excellent opportunity to work collaboratively with other pupils and get different points of view on the important issues.

Mr Stone sets an agenda for each month’s meeting and the members are encouraged to research this beforehand so their contributions are purposeful and can implement real change across all schools. The pupils are also given the exciting opportunity to meet guest speakers who are experts in their fields. When discussing online bullying, we met someone who worked for the BBC who had been on television. Another month, we got to pose questions to a real-life astronaut! The members are also asked to run school initiatives like an E-Safety poster competition and decide on topics an upcoming debate competition across the Discovery Schools.

The Pupil Parliament is therefore a natural progression from the School Council, allowing our elected members to have an even further influence beyond the school community, and contribute towards shaping the education of thousands of children across Leicestershire.
